Vintage Film Camera Buying Guide

What to check before buying a second-hand 35mm film camera in the UK.

Before You Buy

A vintage camera can be an excellent way to get into film photography, but age means that condition is often more important than the model name.

Two cameras of exactly the same model can have very different values depending on storage history, servicing, cosmetic condition, lens condition and whether the camera has actually been tested.

Used Camera Checklist

1. Shutter Check that the shutter fires and that different speeds appear to operate consistently.
2. Lens Look for fungus, haze, scratches and signs of separation.
3. Film Advance Check whether the film advance and rewind mechanisms operate correctly.
4. Light Meter If the camera has a meter, establish whether it responds when tested.
5. Battery Compartment Look for corrosion or residue around old batteries and contacts.
6. Light Seals Old foam light seals can deteriorate and may eventually need replacement.

What Does "Untested" Mean?

An "untested" camera should not automatically be assumed to work. It generally means the seller has not established that the relevant functions operate correctly.

Buyer caution: If you need a camera that is ready to shoot, pay particular attention to listings that clearly explain what has actually been tested.

Questions Worth Asking a Seller

Choosing Between Cheap and Tested

The cheapest listing is not necessarily the cheapest way into film photography. A low-priced camera that requires repair can quickly cost more than a camera that was already demonstrated to be operational.

For beginners, a clearly described example with realistic photographs and a sensible return policy can be preferable to a heavily discounted camera with an unknown history.
