Film & Vintage Camera Batteries

Understand the batteries used by older film cameras and what to check before buying.

Why Batteries Matter

Not every vintage film camera uses batteries in the same way. Some mechanical cameras can fire their shutter without battery power, while electronic cameras may depend on batteries for significant parts of their operation.

Before buying an older camera, it is therefore useful to establish what type of battery it uses and which camera functions depend upon it.

Common Battery Considerations

Mechanical Cameras Some mechanical SLRs can operate their shutter without batteries, although their light meters may still require power.
Electronic Cameras Electronic cameras can depend much more heavily on battery power for exposure, shutter or other functions.
Old Battery Compartments Check carefully for corrosion, residue or damaged contacts before buying.
Light Meters A camera may appear mechanically functional while its built-in meter no longer operates.

Mercury Batteries in Older Cameras

Some older cameras were designed around mercury oxide cells. These batteries are no longer commonly available because of environmental restrictions.

Important:

Do not assume that simply installing a modern battery with a similar physical size will produce identical electrical characteristics. The correct solution depends on the camera and its meter design.

Battery Corrosion

Battery leakage can damage electrical contacts and, in severe cases, internal camera electronics.

When viewing photographs of a used camera listing, look closely at the battery compartment. If photographs are missing, asking the seller for a clear photograph can be worthwhile.

Film Is Different From Batteries

The film itself does not power the camera. Traditional 35mm cameras use photographic film that records the image when exposed to light, while batteries may power the camera's metering, electronics, motor drive or other functions depending on the model.
